Description

This cosy 17th Century Inn, nestles opposite the historic church in the picturesque village setting of Steeple Morden, Cambridgeshire.

Under the management of Owners Alan and Sandra Lloyd, the Waggon and Horses is enjoying a new lease of life and happily boasts a friendly relaxed welcome, fine cask ales, and excellent food which is served daily in both the character dining room and lounge bar.

A variety of food is served. Specials boards run alongside a traditional bar menu and our ‘fantastic fresh fish and chips’is available weekly Wednesday-Saturday. On a Sunday we serve a choice of traditional roasts, (locally renowned to be ‘the Best Sunday Lunch Around!’) but remember to save some room for one of our scrummy homemade desserts. We also offer a range of homemade pizza’s that are available to eat-in or take-away so download your menu now!

The Waggon boasts a large garden to the rear with excellent children’s play facilities, and a pretty heated patio to the front. The surrounding countryside boasts many well posted walks, so whether you’re heading out for a day or planning a stay in our own camping and touring park, there’s definitely something for everyone at ‘The Waggon’!

The touring park at the rear of the site is affiliated to the Camping and Caravanning Club of Great Britain and offers five electric hook-up pitches in a quiet and secluded two acre setting.

The site backs on to open countryside with direct access to a multitude of footpaths and bridal ways offering much interest to nature enthusiasts, bird watchers and dog walkers alike.

Without Electric Hook-up - £8 per night

Local Attractions

Steeple Morden and the surrounding villages themselves are steeped in history, the Museum in neighbouring village Ashwell provides a well of information relating to the area, its farming and brewing histories in particular. In fact, the village of Ashwell at one time was able to boast some 37 ale houses! In Steeple Morden no less than 8 eight ale houses survived into the 1950’s, but now only the Waggon and Horses remains.

The disused R.A.F. airfield is a popular point of interest to visitors to Steeple Morden. Opened in 1938 and covering 175 acres of land, the airfield was used by the 355th Fighter Group of the USAF. In February 1942 an unusual event occurred, when a German JU -88 Bomber, thinking they were over France, crash landed at the airfield. The crew were quickly captured and taken to Bassingbourn for interrogation. Connections with the 355th still exist, with regular visits by former squadron members to the School and the local Scout Group, whose Venture Unit was linked to the 355th and carries its flash on their uniform.

Walking
For those who like to take in an area on foot, there are well documented walks, and maps have been created by keen local walkers for the pleasure of others.

The Waggon and Horses regularly hosts walks by Ramblers Associations and Clubs, offering an ideal meeting point with a warm welcome and tasty lunch on return!
